Broom Making Workshop
Discover the art of making handmade brooms! This course is an introduction to broommaking materials and construction. You will learn how to make a real broom (whisk broom or pot-scrubber/cake-tester) for decorative or functional use with simple materials. The course begins with a tour of growing broomcorn and material gathering and will end with a finished small hand broom. Kitchen brooms and decorative options will be discussed. In the end, you will gain the knowledge and confidence to explore the world of hand-crafted brooms. Participants should refrain from wearing open toed shoes and plan to bring a sharp knife and scissors.
Intermediate Broom Making: Beyond the Basics
Take your knowledge and skill of handmade brooms even farther! This course moves beyond an introduction to broom making and concentrates on full size kitchen Shaker brooms. Students will craft broom using broom tying tables and original 1880’s Shaker broom clamps. Turkey brooms, processing broom corn, and crafting a table kick machine will also be discussed. By the end of class, student will leave with at lest one full size usable kitchen broom, possibly two or three. Handmade brooms make a wonderful holiday gift.
