The Michigan Folk School’s Intern–Apprenticeship Program offers a rare, hands-on opportunity to train alongside skilled artisan instructors. Apprentices gain real experience through class support, direct instruction, and project-based learning within their chosen craft. The program is designed to prepare apprentices to teach entry-level classes and workshops under the guidance of a Master Artisan. With financial support and immersive training, this program builds both skill and confidence—often leading to future teaching opportunities at the Michigan Folk School.

Stained Glass 

Learn the art of stained glass from the ground up—working directly with a Master Artisan.

Apprentices gain hands-on experience through class support, guided instruction, and project-based learning. Training focuses on core techniques and prepares apprentices to teach entry-level classes under supervision.

  • Glass cutting, shaping, and assembly

  • Soldering and finishing techniques

  • Design fundamentals and pattern work

  • Mosaic applications

  • 3d structureal work

Leather Smith

Learn traditional leather craft from the ground up—working directly with a Master Artisan.

Apprentices build skills through hands-on projects, class support, and guided instruction. Training emphasizes foundational techniques and prepares apprentices to teach entry-level classes under supervision.

What You’ll Learn

  • History and use

  • Cutting, tooling, and shaping leather

  • Stitching and construction techniques

  • Finishing and product assembly

  • Pattering and Templating
